CHARACTER INFO
Character: Kieran
Canon: Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, post Mochi Mayhem Epilogue
Age: Roughly 15 (Official age isn’t given; the French translation states Kieran is 14 at the time of the Teal Mask DLC, but this is the only time an age is given for him, and since I’m taking him post-Mochi Mayhem, I’m rolling with 15).
Background Information: Kieran’s Bulbapedia article
Personality:
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.
Upon initially meeting Kieran, he comes across as shy, unassuming, and quiet, bordering on awkward at times. He very much has a “shy introvert kid” aura to him, and has a gentle disposition that helps reinforce that impression he gives. Coming from a small rural town, he also has a more rural accent to his speech, which he does his best to hide when dealing with strangers for the first time. However, once someone gets past his initial awkward outer shell, they’ll find a young man who holds a deep curiosity about things that catch his interest, as well as a natural empathetic soul. When speaking to his grandfather, the older man states that Kieran “always was a sensitive child,” and this extends to his treatment of others around him. He tends to view those who are outcast and excluded with deep empathy, especially when it came to his initial views of Ogerpon, the ogre of Kitakami legends; while the town was comfortable writing it off as merely a monster, Kieran thought that The Ogre was cool for fighting so hard against the Loyal Three all alone and wished to grow strong enough to not only allow others to rely on him, but for The Ogre to perhaps one day view him as its friend. He also has an intuitive ability to understand Pokemon strategy and battle, and genuinely enjoys Pokemon battling and growing both his Pokemon and himself as a trainer.
After his initial bout as Champion of the Blueberry Academy’s BB League and his encounter with Terapagos in the underdepths of Area Zero (which will be elaborated on more in later sections), Kieran has grown more as a person. While still awkward and shy at times, he has gained more confidence in himself and his abilities and doesn’t view strength as the only factor in growing one’s abilities. Though still struggling with some of his prior behaviours and the ramifications of his time as the BB League Champion, his dedication to be a better person and not be so consumed with competing with others has allowed him to mellow out somewhat, and allow him to relax and have fun again. He still wishes to grow and become strong, but he doesn’t want to be consumed by that desire in the same ways as he once was.
2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
Kieran’s greatest goal that he has is that he wants to be someone who other people can rely on, and be strong enough to stand on his own two feet. When we first meet Kieran in Kitakami, he is so shy and timid that he hides behind his older sister Carmine, and it’s only through Carmine’s insistence and pushing that he ends up pairing up with the player character (Florian if Male MC an Juliana if Female MC), despite showing great interest in them and apparently gushing about them the whole night after their initial battle and victory over Carmine, who at that time was the town's strongest trainer. Kieran tends to develop something of a hero-worship of those whom he idolizes; first The Ogre, and then the player character. He wants to be strong and defiant to those who would shun him, just like how he viewed the Ogre in the stories he grew up with. He wants to be able to go anywhere, be friends with anyone, and cultivate strong Pokemon, just like the player character seems to be able to. While much of this hero-worship is a little fantastical and at times misguided, Kieran has good intentions for those desires. He dislikes always cowering behind his sister and not standing up for himself, and thus wants to be just like those he respects.
After losing his Champion title Kieran still holds those same motivations, though not with the same level of intensity or obsession that he once held during his time as Champion. He still wants to grow and get stronger, and be someone who others can rely on; that core desire hasn’t changed. However, he also has recently been wanting to understand what he himself wants. When spoken to after returning from his leave of absence from school following the encounter with Terapagos, Kieran admits that he dropped out of the BB League because he wants to figure out what it is he really wants to do, and not just obsess over competing and getting stronger. He admits that he still wants to try to reclaim the Championship title from the player, but he wants to save that for “once I clear my head a bit.“ So while still wanting to grow, he also is currently working on self-discovery and self-improvement on more than just competitive strength.
3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
Kieran’s biggest flaw is his ability to turn a hyperfixation into an all-consuming obsession. That, paired with his struggles with self-worth and his desire to not be weak, had at one point created a rather toxic mix in Kieran that made him lash out in the worst ways. During the events of The Teal Mask, the player character and Carmine end up having an encounter with Ogerpon, and to protect Kieran from doing something rash opted to not tell him about it. Then later, after speaking to their grandfather, we learn the truth of Ogerpon: rather than being a vicious ogre, Ogerpon was actually a victim and was lashing out to protect itself from three violent Pokemon, who turned out to be the Loyal Three. While their grandfather insists he will tell Kieran when the time is right, Kieran ended up overhearing the whole thing, and accused us of being liars and treating him like an outcast. He battles the player several times to prove his worth, but each time the player triumphs. And in the end, after Ogerpon’s name is cleared and the Loyal Three (now dubbed the Lousy Three) are defeated, Ogerpon instead chooses to go with the player character rather than stay at the Dreaded Den.
These events completely shatter Kieran’s self-worth, and he ends up spiralling pretty badly during the events of the Indigo Disk. He becomes obsessed with growing stronger, believing if he were simply strong enough to beat the player character, he could prove himself worthy not only to Ogerpon, but to everyone. He throws himself into his studies and trains nonstop, even foregoing meals and making himself sick because he refuses to rest. His efforts do allow him to become the BB League Champion, but at the cost of his relationships to those around him. He becomes cold, brash, and aggressive, forcefully kicking out members of the BB League who don’t meet his standards; we see one instance of this when we overhear him berate and kick out a member for not having the time to raise 5 Pokemon. The other Elite Four members admit that the club isn’t as fun as it was before Kieran became Champion, claiming that things feel “off” and that they wish things could go back to normal. Kieran’s obsession with defeating us, however, makes him blind to all of these concerns, and even after his defeat he still tries to claim he just needs to get stronger and stronger.
It’s not until he accompanies the player down to the underdepths of Area Zero that he starts seeing the error of his ways. So obsessed with becoming stronger, he awakens the legendary Terapagos and captures it in a Master Ball when it starts showing interest in the player. However, after terastallizing it, Terapagos goes berserk and attacks Kieran; it’s only thanks to the player’s intervention that Kieran isn't killed by the onslaught. He spirals for a moment as he realizes that this wasn’t what he wanted and that his actions put everyone in peril, but then comes to his senses enough to help the player subdue Terapagos and even encourages them to capture Terapagos. Afterwards, Kieran admits that his desire to be just like the player had made him act horribly towards others, and his obsession with getting stronger only ended up hurting others. He apologizes to the player, asking if they could start over from zero and be friends again, and later goes and apologizes to all the other BB League members as well. He ends up taking a leave of absence from school for a time, and when he returns he drops out of the League so that he can focus on his own needs and figuring out what it is he really wants. This entire event is something Kieran feels overwhelmingly guilty over, and while he still has that competitive nature within him, he wants to make sure he doesn’t fall into those same obsessive trappings again.
4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
- Kieran has a massive sweet tooth and loves all kinds of candy, chocolate, and sweets. Candy apples are his favourite
- Kieran doesn’t have a smartphone, and doesn't even really know how to use one
- Kieran used to feel self-conscious about his Kitakami accent, but has been trying to embrace it more. Still, when he’s talking to someone he’s comfortable with, his accent will be way more apparent
- Kieran’s entire Champion team, as well as the strategies he uses, are based on real-world competitive strategies from the Pokemon VGC championships
Abilities:
- Champion-Level Trainer: Kieran’s studied a lot of battle lore and strategies, enough to make him very adept at battling on a competitive level. His ability to form strategies and train Pokemon are strong enough to enable him to have claimed the title of Champion in the past, and even after his defeat he is considered one of the strongest trainers at the Blueberry Academy
- Woodworking skills: Kieran’s family comes from a long line of skilled mask artisans, and it’s confirmed the masks that Ogerpon wears were carved from Kieran’s ancestors. It’s safe to assume he has rudimentary knowledge of woodworking and artisanal skills from his family.
Inventory:
- His clothes and yellow satchel
- His Tera Orb
- Pokemon Roster: The following image displays his current team that he uses during most of his BB League battles :

- Backup Roster: The following image displays Pokemon that currently aren’t a part of his main team, but remain in his possession:

Upon arriving in Escordvi, the only Pokemon Kieran will have on him is his Hydrapple. Any others he would like to bring in (be it from his main team or his reserves) will have to be regained.

ARMADA SELECTION
Right now I am undecided on which armada Kieran could be a part of. On one hand he could fit in with the Paladins, especially since their monicker of upholding order and peacekeeping across the ocean could be something he admires and wishes to look up to, especially given his current drive to better himself and gain strength the right way, rather than through competitiveness. On the other hand, the Corsairs could also be a good fit for him, as their creed of freedom could enable him the ability to explore himself fully and discover what kind of person he truly wants to be. I'm fine with him on either armada, so I'm ok letting his fate be left up to the mods!
